Prepaid Visa vs Mastercard Gift Cards: Pros, Cons, and Bulk Orders

Written by Christie Lee | Jul 11, 2025

Choosing between Visa and Mastercard gift cards for a group reward comes down to the card behind the logo. Both work wherever their network is accepted, so what really differs is where each card works, how much it holds, and how long it lasts.

Here’s the short version for the cards Giftronaut offers. Visa suits recipients in the US or Canada, and the Global Visa Reward Card covers people abroad online, in store, and by phone. The Swype Global Mastercard suits recipients abroad who need more than USD 500 on one card or longer to spend it.

TL;DR

  • Visa and Mastercard gift cards both work wherever their network is accepted; each card’s own terms set its fees, limits, and validity.
  • Visa’s strengths: local US and Canada cards, a global card for recipients abroad, and easy in-store use through mobile wallets.
  • The Swype Global Mastercard’s strengths: up to USD 999 per card and up to three years to spend; its trade-offs are per-purchase fees abroad and limited in-store use.
  • Bulk Mastercard gift cards go out like any Giftronaut order: one spreadsheet, with a different amount for each person if needed.

Is a Visa or Mastercard gift card better?

Neither network is better on acceptance alone. As of October 2026, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s prepaid key terms page says a network-logo card works wherever that card type is accepted. The same CFPB page says the cardholder agreement sets each card’s fees and spending limits.

So the useful comparison is between specific cards, not logos. Two Visa cards can behave very differently. Giftronaut’s US Prepaid Visa works only in the United States, while its Global Visa Reward Card is built for international use.

Fees follow the same rule, since each issuer sets its own. For what each card costs, see our guide to Visa gift cards with no fees.

Visa vs Mastercard gift cards: pros and cons

Visa wins on in-store use and easy setup for recipients. Mastercard wins on the time recipients get to spend it, and abroad it holds more per card than the Global Visa. The table compares Giftronaut’s US and Canada Visa cards, its Global Visa Reward Card, and the Swype Global Mastercard, point by point.

Giftronaut’s Visa cards and the Swype Global Mastercard compared

Visa (US & Canada) Global Visa Global Mastercard
Where it works US card: only in the United States, including DC. Canada card: only in Canada Visa merchants in 225 countries, online and in store, excluding countries under US sanctions Online wherever Mastercard is accepted, in 202 countries, excluding countries under US sanctions
In store Through a mobile wallet such as Apple Wallet or Google Wallet In store and by phone at any Visa merchant Only where the merchant accepts tap to pay or can enter card details by hand
Amount per card US card: USD 5 to 1,000. Canada card: CAD 5 to 1,000 USD 5 to 500 USD 5 to 999
Time to spend 6 months from issuance 6 months from issuance Up to 3 years, but it expires 90 days after the last activity
Recipient setup No account needed; the recipient enters the claim code from the reward email No account needed, activated from the voucher link Recipient registers the card and creates a Swype account
Fees No activation, monthly, or inactivity fees No fee on USD purchases, 6% on non-USD purchases USD 0.50 per purchase outside the United States, plus transaction and inactivity fees
Reload or ATM cash No reload; ATM withdrawals commonly not supported No reload; no ATM use No reload; no ATM use

Visa is the low-friction pick: recipients tap to pay in stores, and the US and Canada cards carry no activation or inactivity fees. Abroad, the Global card charges 6% on purchases in other currencies.

Mastercard asks more of the recipient but gives more room abroad. A single Swype card holds up to USD 999, against USD 500 on the Global Visa, and an active cardholder keeps it for up to three years. The catch is per-purchase fees abroad and a card that lapses after 90 quiet days.

Which should you send: Visa or Mastercard?

Start with where your recipients will spend the card. Location settles most cases, and the amount or spending window settles the rest. The flow below sums it up.

  • Everyone in the United States: the US Prepaid Visa. It works online and in stores through a mobile wallet, with no activation or inactivity fees.
  • Everyone in Canada: the Canada Prepaid Visa, issued in CAD for use within Canada. A Canada Mastercard option and the other details of sending to Canada are in our guide for Canadian recipients.
  • Sending internationally: the Global Visa Reward Card or the Swype Global Mastercard. How it works abroad is in our international Visa gift card guide.
  • A mixed group, or preferences you don’t know: a Giftronaut Choice Card. It is the most ideal choice for diverse or international audiences.

Visa also holds up when recipients choose for themselves. We looked at Giftronaut Choice Card selections for US products, from orders placed January 2025 to August 2026. The Visa Virtual Reward Card came second at 10.7%, behind Amazon.com at 49.4%.

How to buy bulk Mastercard gift cards

For recipients abroad, send the Swype Global Mastercard in one order for the whole group. You fund the account, upload a recipient list, and send. Each person gets their own card by email.

  1. Fund your account. Every Giftronaut order is prepaid, so the balance must cover the whole order before you place it.
  2. Choose the card. Start a one-time order and pick the Swype Global Mastercard as the reward.
  3. Upload your recipient spreadsheet. Set a different amount for each person if you need to, anywhere from USD 5 to 999.
  4. Send now or schedule a date. Rewards go out by email. Text delivery works only for US and Canadian +1 numbers, so recipients abroad get email.

Comparing platforms for mass prepaid Visa or Mastercard distribution? Run this same flow with a small test list first. Rewards that repeat, such as birthdays or survey completions, can run as a Smart Order instead of a new order each time.

One customer shows what this saves in practice. Top Line Marketing, a global marketing consultancy, uses Giftronaut to send survey, review, and referral incentives to its international users. It reports 5 hours per week saved.

What to check before you send Mastercard cards in bulk

Check five things before the order goes out: where the card works, its currency, its deadlines, unredeemed value, and its limits. Each one is easy to miss when the list is long.

  • Where it works: online in 202 countries wherever Mastercard is accepted, but never in countries subject to US sanctions. The full restricted list is in our Swype Global Mastercard guide.
  • Currency: the card is issued in USD. Purchases in other currencies are converted at the prevailing exchange rate.
  • Three separate deadlines: the Giftronaut reward expires 180 days after sending if unredeemed. Swype’s activation link lasts 60 days from issuance. The card itself lasts up to three years and expires 90 days after its last activity.
  • Unredeemed value: the Refund Option, selected when you place the order, shortens the reward deadline to 30, 60, or 90 days. It recovers up to 50% of unredeemed value to your Giftronaut account balance.
  • Limits: each card is single-load, closes at a zero balance, and can’t be used at ATMs or on peer-to-peer apps like Venmo.

The deadlines matter most for a large send. Tell recipients to activate and use the card soon, since the activation link and the card each run on their own clock.

Match the card to where people will spend it

Visa and Mastercard gift cards work wherever their network is accepted, so the logo rarely decides the outcome. Pick Visa at home and for rewards abroad up to USD 500. Pick Mastercard when recipients abroad need a bigger amount or more time to spend it. Then send the whole group in one order.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Mastercard gift card?

A Mastercard gift card is a prepaid card with the Mastercard logo, usable at any location that accepts Mastercard. Its cardholder agreement, not the network, sets its fees and spending limits.

Is there an international Mastercard gift card?

Yes. The Swype Global Mastercard works online wherever Mastercard is accepted, in 202 countries. It can’t be used in countries subject to US sanctions.

Is there a limit on how much you can load on each card in a bulk order?

Yes, every product has a minimum and a maximum. On Giftronaut, the US Prepaid Visa takes USD 5 to 1,000 per card and the Canada Prepaid Visa CAD 5 to 1,000. Abroad, the Swype Global Mastercard takes USD 5 to 999 and the Global Visa Reward Card USD 5 to 500.

Can recipients withdraw cash from a prepaid Visa or Mastercard reward card?

Plan for no cash access. Giftronaut’s two global cards can’t be used at ATMs, and its Help Center lists ATM withdrawals as commonly not supported on its prepaid Visa cards. Other issuers set their own rules in the cardholder agreement.

Can you reload a prepaid Visa or Mastercard gift card?

No, not Giftronaut’s. Its Visa cards and the Swype Global Mastercard are single-load, and each closes once the balance is spent. To give someone more, send a new reward.

Can you use a virtual prepaid Mastercard in a store?

Yes, where the store supports it. The Swype Global Mastercard works in stores that accept tap to pay or can enter card details by hand. Recipients add it to a mobile wallet to tap and pay.
