Best Gift Cards for Christmas 2026: 12 Vouchers and When to Send

Illustration of three blue gift cards tied with ribbon beside a small Christmas tree and wrapped presents

The best gift cards for Christmas are the ones the recipient can picture spending: a single brand such as Amazon, Target or Starbucks when you know their habits, and a multi-brand card or prepaid Visa when you don’t. For business gifts, match the card to the recipient (employee, client or customer) and to the country they live in, then send digital cards a few days early so funding and scheduling don’t push them past December 25.

At a previous job’s December gift swap, I brought a lamp shaped like a cactus. It took me a whole Saturday to find, and I was quietly proud of it. Across the table, someone’s plain envelope with a coffee shop gift card got stolen four times in twenty minutes. The cactus went home with the last person to pick, who told me, kindly, “Nobody’s coming for the cactus.”

The envelope won because everyone at that table could picture exactly where they’d spend it. That’s the test for any Christmas gift card, whether you’re buying one for a friend or three hundred for a company.

Which Gift Cards Make the Best Christmas Gifts?

Gift cards make the best Christmas gifts when they pass four checks: the recipient already shops at the brand, the card works in the country where they live, it arrives before the holiday, and the amount fits the relationship. A card that fails any one of those becomes a polite thank-you followed by a forgotten email.

Here’s what each check means in practice:

  • They already shop there. A grocery or big-box card gets used because it replaces money the person would have spent anyway. A niche brand only works if you know it’s their niche.
  • It works where they live. Brand gift cards are country-specific. An Amazon.co.uk gift card can’t be redeemed on Amazon.com in the United States, and the same split applies to Uber, PlayStation, Airbnb and Apple.
  • It arrives on time. A digital gift card can land minutes after you send it. A plastic card in the mail is at the mercy of the December shipping rush.
  • The amount fits. A coffee card says thanks to a coworker. The same card to your biggest client can read as an afterthought.

If you can’t answer the first question for a person, that’s your signal to let them choose. That’s where a multi-brand card or a prepaid Visa earns its place on the list below.

Which Christmas Gift Card Fits Employees, Clients or Customers?

The right Christmas gift card for a business recipient depends on who they are to you: employees usually get a card they choose themselves, clients get a modest card from a brand they use, and customers get a small, familiar brand. The recipient type also decides the tax treatment, so it’s worth settling before you pick brands.

Diagram showing which Christmas gift card fits employees, clients and customers, with the tax rule for each

The send-by dates below assume you start an ACH deposit by Monday, December 14, 2026, as in the timeline further down.

RecipientCard to send (and what to check)Amount and send-by
EmployeesA multi-brand card or prepaid Visa, so each person picks (taxable wages, so it goes through payroll)$50 to $100 and up; send before the last working day, such as Friday, December 18
ClientsA brand they already use, or a multi-brand card (check their gift policy)Around $25, where the deduction stops; send by December 18, leaving time for email filters
CustomersOne well-known brand that works in their country$5 to $25; schedule any day up to Christmas morning

The tax rules are the part people skip. The IRS says cash equivalents, including gift cards, “no matter how little, are never excludable as a de minimis benefit” for employees (IRS Publication 15-B, 2026), so an employee’s Christmas gift card goes through payroll. For clients, the IRS lets a business deduct “no more than $25 for business gifts you give directly or indirectly to each person during your tax year” (IRS Publication 463, 2025). Our guide to how gift cards are taxed covers contractors and other recipients, and your payroll team or tax adviser has the final word.

The amounts in the table are a judgment call, so treat them as starting points to argue about rather than benchmarks. Small amounts are easy to send: on Giftronaut, about three quarters of USD gift cards start at a $5 minimum. At the top end, the most common maximum on a USD gift card is $500 or $100, so a larger employee gift may need a prepaid card or two cards.

The 12 Best Christmas Gift Cards and Vouchers to Buy in 2026

The 12 best gift cards for Christmas in 2026 cover the main ways people spend: a card they choose, a prepaid Visa, the big retailers, coffee, food delivery, tech, gaming and travel. Each pick below says who it suits and the one condition most likely to trip up a holiday order. Brand details come from each card’s page in the Giftronaut catalog, checked on November 5, 2026, and the pick counts are Giftronaut data from September 2026: how many times recipients chose each product.

1. A Multi-Brand Choice Card: For Anyone You Can’t Read

A multi-brand card lets the recipient pick the brand, which makes it the safe pick for a team, a client list or the relative who returns everything. A Giftronaut Choice Card covers 4,300+ brands in 225 countries, and the recipient picks their country and currency when they redeem it, so you don’t need to know where everyone lives. They can also split one card across more than one brand, part Amazon and part Uber, for example.

Recipients seem to like the choice. Rewards where recipients pick their own brand account for 82% of Giftronaut recipients (Giftronaut data, September 2026). The catch is finality: once someone confirms a brand, the card is redeemed and can’t be exchanged.

2. A Prepaid Visa: For People Who Want to Spend Anywhere

A prepaid Visa works where Visa debit cards are accepted, so it suits people with no obvious favorite store. The Visa Reward Virtual Account in Giftronaut’s catalog can be used online, by phone, or in a store through a digital wallet in the U.S. and District of Columbia, with no cash or ATM access. It’s also the second most-picked product among Giftronaut recipients, chosen 3,828 times.

Check the expiry before you give it as a Christmas present: the virtual account in our catalog carries a 6-month expiration, and the physical Visa Reward Card a 12-month one. For recipients abroad, the Global Visa Reward Card can be used in 223 countries. Our guide to virtual prepaid cards explains how they differ from brand cards.

3. Amazon: For the Person Who Shops for Everything Online

An Amazon gift card is the closest thing to a default, because it covers almost any category. Amazon is the brand Giftronaut recipients pick most often, chosen 18,446 times, and it takes 51.0% of recipient selections in the United States (Giftronaut data, September 2026). Amazon.com gift cards never expire, according to the catalog listing.

The catch is the country. Amazon.com, Amazon.ca, Amazon.co.uk, Amazon DE and Amazon.es are separate products, and each one only works on its own site.

4. Walmart: For Groceries and Household Basics

A Walmart gift card suits anyone whose December budget goes to groceries, toys and home basics, which is a lot of people. The Walmart eGift Card works at Walmart.com or printed out in a Walmart store, doesn’t expire and carries no fees. It’s U.S.-only, and it’s the third most-picked product among Giftronaut recipients, chosen 2,264 times.

5. Target: For Home, Toys and Last-Minute Shopping

A Target gift card is a strong pick for families and for anyone still finishing their own Christmas shopping. The Target eGiftCard works at more than 1,900 Target stores in the U.S. and on Target.com, and Target’s own line is “No fees. No expiration.” In a store, the cashier scans the barcode from the email on the recipient’s phone.

6. Starbucks: For a Small, Friendly Thank-You

A Starbucks card is the classic small Christmas thank-you for coworkers, customers and the people who keep an office running. It works at participating Starbucks stores in the U.S. and Canada only, so it’s a poor fit for a team in Europe or Asia. Recipients pay by scanning the barcode on their phone, and it’s the fourth most-picked product on Giftronaut, chosen 1,928 times.

7. DoorDash or Uber Eats: For Remote Teams and Busy Households

A food delivery card buys someone a night off from cooking, which is worth a lot in the last two weeks of December. A DoorDash gift card works on eligible orders on DoorDash.com or in the app in the U.S. and Puerto Rico, needs a DoorDash account and doesn’t expire. An Uber Eats card works only in the U.S. and is added in the Uber Eats app’s Wallet. Ask which app your recipients actually use before you pick one.

8. Apple Gift Card: For Phones, Apps and Subscriptions

An Apple Gift Card suits anyone who lives in Apple’s world, because one card covers products, accessories, apps, games, music and iCloud+ (Apple). The U.S. card works in the United States only, and it can’t be returned or refunded. To spend it in an Apple Store, the recipient takes the card to the store before adding it to their Apple Account.

9. Google Play: For Android Users and Mobile Gamers

A Google Play gift card is the Android counterpart, good for apps, games, movies and music on the Play Store. Google says the cards carry no fees and no expiration dates, and that a card is valid only in the country where it was bought. The U.S. card’s terms add that it isn’t usable for hardware or certain subscriptions, and the recipient must be 13 or older.

10. PlayStation or Xbox: For the Gamer on Your List

A console gift card lets a gamer pick the game themselves, which beats guessing a title they might already own. A PlayStation Store card adds funds to a PlayStation Network account for games, add-ons and a PlayStation Plus subscription. An Xbox card never expires and is redeemed at microsoft.com/redeem, not in a physical store. Both are tied to one country, so check which country the recipient’s account is set to.

11. Best Buy: For Tech Upgrades

A Best Buy gift card works for the person who’s been eyeing a new pair of headphones since October. The Best Buy card is valid in the United States and Puerto Rico only, and online it’s redeemed at checkout with the card number and a 4-digit PIN. It pairs well with a larger budget, since tech rarely costs $25.

12. Airbnb or Hotels.com: For a Trip in the New Year

A travel gift card turns a Christmas gift into something to look forward to in spring. The Airbnb card doesn’t expire, but it’s redeemable only by U.S. residents, on airbnb.com. A Hotels.com card is used on Hotels.com and can be combined with its member deals. For recipients outside the U.S., travel cards such as the TripGift eGift Card, which can be used in 49 countries, are redeemed on the brand’s own site.

For the wider season beyond Christmas, including New Year and other holidays, our list of holiday gift cards covers more brands.

What Are the Best E-Gift Cards for Christmas?

The best e-gift cards for Christmas are the digital versions of the cards above, because they arrive in minutes and can’t get lost in the mail. Every brand in the list has a digital card, and digital is the only format you can still send on December 24 without a courier.

E-gift cards also get used quickly. Half of Giftronaut rewards are redeemed within one day of being sent, and 76.3% within 7 days, based on 45,162 redeemed rewards (Giftronaut data, September 2026). For a gift that should feel like Christmas, that speed is the point.

Two details matter more for e-gift cards than for plastic ones. First, delivery: Giftronaut sends rewards by email, by text message to U.S. and Canadian mobile numbers, or as a reward link you share yourself. Second, the inbox: corporate security filters often hold reward emails, so for a client list, ask their IT team to allowlist no-reply@giftronaut.com, or send by text where you can. For more ideas on quick digital gifts at work, see our guide to last-minute eGift cards.

What Are the Best Gift Cards for Christmas for Adults?

The best gift cards for adults at Christmas are the practical ones: groceries and household cards (Walmart, Target), Amazon, a prepaid Visa, food delivery and travel. Adults tend to have the things they want and a long list of things they need, so a card that covers the need usually gets used first.

A few quick matches:

  • The person who has everything: a multi-brand card, so they choose.
  • The commuter or coffee person: Starbucks.
  • The tired parent or new homeowner: DoorDash, Uber Eats, Walmart or Target.
  • The planner who’s already thinking about spring: Airbnb or Hotels.com.
  • The tech or gaming fan: Apple, Google Play, PlayStation, Xbox or Best Buy.

How to Choose the Right Christmas Voucher or Gift Card

Christmas vouchers, also called Christmas gift vouchers or Xmas vouchers, are gift cards under another name: “voucher” is the usual word in the UK, Ireland and Australia, and “gift card” in the U.S. and Canada. Whatever you call it, the choice comes down to three decisions, made in this order.

  1. Choose the format. Single brand when you know the person, multi-brand or prepaid Visa when you don’t.
  2. Choose the country. A voucher works where it was issued, so a UK colleague needs a UK voucher, not a U.S. card.
  3. Choose the amount. Every gift card has its own minimum and maximum value set by the brand, and some come only in fixed amounts, so check the range before you plan a budget.

Expiry is the last thing to check. Most gift cards in the Giftronaut catalog don’t expire, and where a validity period applies, the brand sets it, most often 12 months. A card that expires in six months can still be a fine Christmas gift, as long as the recipient knows.

Which Gift Cards Can You Still Get in Time for Christmas?

Digital gift cards are the ones you can still get in time for Christmas, because they’re delivered by email, text or link instead of by mail. The real deadline isn’t delivery, it’s funding: on most business platforms, the account has to hold the money before an order can go out.

Timeline of example dates in December 2026 for funding, testing and sending Christmas gift cards so they arrive on time

On Giftronaut, every order is prepaid, so plan backwards from the day you want cards to arrive:

  • Funding time. ACH typically takes 2 to 3 business days and wire 1 business day, counted from the day your bank sends the payment. A credit card deposit is usually almost instant during U.S. business hours, with a 3% processing fee.
  • First deposit. A new business account’s first deposit is held while the business is verified, and most reviews finish within one business day.
  • The send itself. You can send right away or schedule the order for a specific date and time, including Christmas morning.

Take a team whose last working day before the break is Friday, December 18, 2026. Start an ACH transfer by Monday, December 14, and the money should be ready by Thursday the 17th, leaving a day to send a test email and fix the message before the real send. If it’s your first deposit, start a day earlier.

December is when everyone else is sending too. In 2025, Giftronaut had 4.4 times more recipients in December than its monthly average for the year (Giftronaut data, full year 2025), so leave room for the questions that come with a big send. For sending at scale, our guide to bulk Christmas gifts covers ordering for a whole company, and our walkthrough of choosing a platform for Christmas gift cards covers where to buy.

Tips for Sending Digital Christmas Vouchers the Right Way

Digital Christmas vouchers land well when the message sounds like a person wrote it and the timing matches the recipient’s week. A few habits make the difference:

  • Write one real sentence. “Merry Christmas” plus one line about the year beats a paragraph of company boilerplate.
  • Send a test to yourself first. It shows you the subject line, the design and the message exactly as recipients will see them. On Giftronaut, the gift card in a test email is a sample and can’t be redeemed.
  • Use a Christmas design. Giftronaut lets you pick a ready-made design, create one with AI, or upload your own image.
  • Translate for a global team. Giftronaut can translate a reward email into up to 5 languages per order.
  • Mind the clock. Giftronaut recipients mostly redeem during working hours, with 68.3% of redemptions between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. Eastern (Giftronaut data, September 2026). A card scheduled for Christmas morning will still get opened, just maybe after the presents.

Before You Buy This Year’s Christmas Gift Cards

I still own the cactus lamp, for the record. It’s on my desk. These days I bring a gift card to every December swap, and I spend my Saturday on something smaller: picking the one brand everyone in that room actually uses.

That’s the job for your list too. Write down each recipient, where they live and what they already spend money on, then match the card from the 12 above. Fund your account early in the week of December 14, send a test to yourself, and schedule the rest.

For a list that crosses borders, Giftronaut sends a Choice Card or one brand to recipients in 225 countries from a single spreadsheet, and users only pay face value, plus the 3% processing fee if they fund by credit card. To compare where to buy, see our guide to choosing a platform for Christmas gift cards.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best gift cards to give for Christmas?

The best gift cards to give for Christmas are from brands the person already spends money at. If you don’t know their habits, a multi-brand card or prepaid Visa lets them choose.

Which gift cards can you still get in time for Christmas?

Digital gift cards can still arrive in time, because they’re delivered by email, text or link. For business orders, allow time to fund the account before you send.

Are Christmas vouchers the same as gift cards?

Yes, Christmas gift vouchers and gift cards are the same thing. “Voucher” is the common word in the UK, Ireland and Australia, and “gift card” in the U.S. and Canada. Both are prepaid value for a brand or a set of brands.

Do Christmas gift cards expire?

Most don’t. Most gift cards in the Giftronaut catalog have no expiration date, and where one applies, the brand sets it, most often 12 months.

Are Christmas gift cards for employees taxable?

Yes, in the U.S. The IRS treats gift cards to employees as taxable wages, however small, so they go through payroll.

Can you schedule a gift card to arrive on Christmas morning?

Yes. On Giftronaut, you can schedule an order for a specific date and time, and a scheduled order can be cancelled until it’s sent.

Can I send a Christmas gift card to someone in another country?

Yes, if the card is issued for their country. Brand cards are country-specific, so send a local card or a Choice Card, which lets the recipient pick their country when they redeem.
