When the person you’re rewarding lives outside the United States, an international Visa gift card is the one to send. So what’s the difference between an international Visa gift card and a regular Visa gift card? A regular one is typically limited to the country that issued it, while an international one is built to be spent across borders.
That difference decides whether the reward can be spent at all. So it pays to check the card before you buy, not after the recipient tries to use it.
Is there a Visa gift card that can be used internationally?
The Global Visa Reward Card is issued in USD and accepted at Visa merchants in 225 countries, online and in-store. It can’t be used in countries subject to US sanctions.
Regular Visa gift cards work differently. Giftronaut’s US Prepaid Visa works only in the United States, and its Canada Prepaid Visa only in Canada. Where the recipient lives doesn’t change that, so a US card sent to someone in Toronto still works only for purchases in the United States.
The same check applies to any prepaid card you buy elsewhere. In its answer last reviewed in September 2024, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau says not all prepaid cards can be used outside the United States. Its advice is to read the cardholder agreement before the card is used abroad.

The two one-country cards stop at their own border. The global card is the one that keeps working when the recipient shops in another country.
What does the Global Visa Reward Card cover abroad?
This global Visa gift card covers most of what a recipient abroad needs. It works across borders, adds to a phone wallet, and needs no account to activate. Its limits are the amount, a 6-month validity, and a fee on purchases outside USD.

How does an international Visa gift card work abroad?
An international Visa gift card works like any Visa card at checkout, but the currency changes the cost. The Global Visa Reward Card holds US dollars, so a purchase in USD carries no fee. A purchase in another currency carries 6% in total: a 3% international fee plus a 3% foreign exchange fee.
Here’s what that looks like. Say a recipient in France buys something priced at the equivalent of $100 in euros. The fee on that purchase is $6 (an illustrative amount). If your recipients shop in local currency, plan the reward amount with that 6% in mind.
The card also reaches places where local gift cards are scarce. Giftronaut’s catalog has locally issued gift cards in six African countries. In the other 42 African countries it reaches, recipients can be rewarded with the Global Visa Reward Card instead.
Three rules are worth passing on to the recipient with the reward.
No cash. The card can’t be used at ATMs or on payment apps like Venmo. It’s for purchases only.
Sanctioned countries. The card doesn’t work in countries subject to US sanctions. Check the restricted list before you send to someone in a new country.
Six months to spend. The card is valid for 6 months from the date it’s issued. Tell the recipient not to save it for a trip next year.
Recipients who need cash can get a PayPal or Venmo payout instead. PayPal is listed for 74 countries and Venmo for the US.
Where can I buy an international Visa gift card?
A business can buy one through Giftronaut, which lists the Global Visa Reward Card USD in its catalog. Wherever you buy, read the card’s terms before you pay. Three points tell you whether it will work for someone abroad.
- Where it works: the countries named in the terms, and any country the issuer excludes.
- Fees on foreign purchases: the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s 2024 answer notes that some prepaid cards charge foreign transaction fees.
- How long it lasts: the validity period, so the recipient knows how long they have to spend it.

Which Visa gift card fits which recipient?
Start from where the recipient will spend the card. One country points to that country’s card, and many countries point to a global card.
- Recipients in the United States: a US Prepaid Visa, with no activation fee. To compare fees, see our guide to Visa gift cards with no fees.
- Recipients in Canada: a Canada Prepaid Visa, issued in CAD for use in Canada. Running a whole program for people there? Our corporate gift cards in Canada guide is built for that case.
- Recipients in many countries: both global cards work across borders. The Global Visa Reward Card covers 225 countries, and the Swype Global Mastercard covers 202. To choose between them, read our Visa vs Mastercard gift card comparison.
- A mixed group, or tastes you don’t know: a Giftronaut Choice Card.
Sending a Global Visa Reward Card with Giftronaut
Giftronaut lets you send the Global Visa Reward Card to recipients in other countries with just their email address. There are no platform fees, contracts, or subscriptions. Credit card funding carries a 3% processing fee, and ACH and wire funding are free.
- Choose the Global Visa Reward Card, or a Giftronaut Choice Card if you want recipients to pick.
- Set the reward amount, then add recipients one by one or upload a spreadsheet.
- Send it right away, or schedule it for a specific date or event.

The recipient gets the card by email and activates it from the voucher link, with no account to create. Then they spend it online, in store, or by phone wherever Visa is accepted.
For a group spread across countries, a Choice Card lets each person pick from 4,300+ brands in 225 countries, depending on their location. A recipient in France, for example, sees gift cards issued for France and priced in EUR. Global options such as the Global Visa Reward Card appear alongside them.
Pick the card by where it will be spent
A Visa logo tells you which merchants accept a card, not which countries it works in. So check where your recipient will spend it first. For one country, send that country’s card. For anywhere else, the Global Visa Reward Card or a Choice Card works best.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can recipients withdraw cash from an international prepaid reward card?
Not with the Global Visa Reward Card. It can’t be used at ATMs or on payment apps like Venmo, so it works for purchases only. For any other card, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s 2024 answer says to check the cardholder agreement first.
Which countries are usually not supported for international gift cards?
Countries subject to US sanctions, for Giftronaut’s two global cards. The Global Visa Reward Card and the Swype Global Mastercard can’t be used there. The full restricted list for the Visa card is in our Global Visa Reward Card guide.
How do I check the balance on an international Visa gift card?
Open the original reward email. Its link leads to a page that shows the remaining balance and the transaction history.
Can I reload an international Visa gift card?
No. The Global Visa Reward Card is single-load, and it closes once the balance reaches $0. To give someone more, send a new card.
Is there a minimum amount for sending a gift card internationally?
It depends on the card, since each product sets its own minimum and maximum. The Global Visa Reward Card starts at $5 and goes up to $500.
What gift cards can be used internationally?
Global prepaid cards and gift cards issued in the recipient’s own country. Giftronaut offers local gift cards in 71 countries. Where no local catalog exists, recipients can choose a global option such as the Global Visa Reward Card.
