Gas gift cards are worth buying when they match where the recipient already fills up: a fuel brand’s own card works only at that brand’s stations, while a prepaid Visa works at gas stations that accept Visa. For drivers who use different stations, send a prepaid Visa or a Choice Card that lets each person pick a fuel brand, and send it digitally by email or text so it lives in the brand’s app or a phone wallet.
The first time I tried to buy gas with a prepaid gift card, the pump declined it before I’d even picked a grade. I tried again, the way you do. Inside, the attendant didn’t look up from the register: “The pump asks for more than that card has. Pay in here and tell me how much.” I paid inside, for exactly what was on the card, and felt slightly outsmarted by a gas pump.
If you’re choosing gas gift cards for commuters, drivers or field staff, the same two questions decide whether the reward works: which stations take the card, and whether it will clear the pump.
Which Gas Gift Cards Are Worth Buying?
A station’s own gas gift card is worth buying when your recipients already fill up at that chain, because it can’t be spent at other chains. Shell, Chevron and Texaco, Exxon and Mobil, and bp and Amoco all sell their own cards, and they differ most in where each one works and whether a digital version exists.
| Brand | Where it works (per the brand) | Digital or physical |
|---|---|---|
| Shell | Shell stations, stores and car washes in the US, not US territories | eGift by email, used in the Shell App; physical too |
| Chevron and Texaco | Chevron and Texaco stations in the US | eGift used in the Chevron app at the pump; physical too |
| Exxon and Mobil | Exxon and Mobil branded stations | Physical card mailed from its site, $5 to $500 |
| bp and Amoco | bp and Amoco stations in the US, not ARCO, ampm or Thorntons | Physical card sold in stores, open value $5 to $500 |
Shell, Exxon Mobil and bp all say their cards carry no fees and don’t expire (brand pages checked November 3, 2026). Shell’s eGift card needs a station that accepts mobile payments, and it can’t be combined with another form of payment, so an in-store purchase over the balance is declined.
Giftronaut’s US catalog includes Shell eGift and Chevron and Texaco cards, plus 76, Phillips 66, Conoco, Pilot Flying J, Wawa and GetGo. That Chevron card is an e-code redeemed in the Chevron app at the pump, not with the cashier, so it suits drivers who already use the app.

Is There a Gas Gift Card for Multiple Stations?
A prepaid Visa is the gas gift card that works at multiple stations, because it isn’t tied to one fuel brand. Visa says its gift cards can be used anywhere Visa is accepted, gas stations included. A Choice Card is the other route: each recipient picks the station brand they actually use.
Giftronaut’s US Prepaid Visa is a virtual card issued in USD and usable only within the United States. Recipients use it online with the card number, or in store by adding it to Apple Pay or Google Wallet where contactless prepaid Visa payments are accepted. It’s single-load, it expires six months after issuance or when the balance reaches $0, whichever comes first, and recipients pay no activation, redemption, monthly or shipping fees.
A Choice Card works differently. The recipient picks the brand when they redeem, and can split one reward across more than one brand. You can also narrow what they see: in the order’s catalog settings you can select individual brands, so a fuel reward can show only gas brands plus a Visa option.
Check which Visa card you pick, though. One Visa reward card in our catalog is a grocery card limited to qualified grocery locations, which makes it the wrong card for fuel. For more on Visa cards at the pump, see our post on using a Visa gift card for gas.

Our US prepaid Visa arrives by email or text and adds to Apple Pay or Google Pay for in-store use.
How Do Digital Gas Gift Cards Work?
Digital gas gift cards arrive as a code or link by email or text, and the recipient uses them through the fuel brand’s app or a phone wallet instead of swiping plastic. What that looks like depends on the card:
- Shell eGift: Shell emails it. The recipient downloads the Shell App, adds the card to their profile, and pays at the pump or in store wherever the station takes mobile payments.
- Chevron eGift: the recipient adds it to the Chevron app as a payment method and uses the app to pay at the pump. Chevron says these cards can’t be reloaded in the app.
- Virtual prepaid Visa: the recipient opens the reward email, reveals the card number, expiry date and CVV, and adds the card to Apple Pay, Google Pay or Samsung Pay for in-store use.
On the sending side, Giftronaut delivers rewards by email, SMS (text message) or reward link, sent right away or scheduled. Texts reach US and Canadian mobile numbers at no extra cost. For a team, add recipients one by one or upload a spreadsheet, and the whole list goes out in one order. Our guide to sending an e-gift card to one person or a whole list walks through the steps.
How Do You Pay for Gas With a Gift Card?
You pay for gas with a gift card at the pump when the pump accepts it, or inside at the register when the pump declines it. A pump can turn down a card the register would take, because of how pump payments start.
Before fuel flows, the card issuer is asked to pre-authorize a set amount and may hold it until the final total arrives. Chevron’s app FAQ says that hold can take up to three days to release. Giftronaut’s Visa instructions say every purchase, holds included, must fit within the available balance or the card declines. Visa’s own guidance is short: you should be able to pay at the pump, and if the transaction can’t be completed, use the card inside the station.

- Match the card to the station. A station card needs its own chain, and a Shell eGift needs a station that takes mobile payments.
- Load it before the drive. Add an eGift card to the brand’s app, or a virtual Visa to the phone wallet, at home rather than at the pump.
- Pick Credit if asked. Giftronaut’s Virtual Visa instructions say to select Credit when prompted at checkout.
- Pay inside when the balance is small. Tell the cashier an amount at or below the balance, then fuel.
- Top off separately. With a physical Shell card, Shell says you can fill up to the card’s remaining amount, then pay the rest in a second transaction.
Gas Gift Card, Prepaid Visa or Fleet Card: Which Fits Your Team?
Choosing a fuel reward for a team comes down to two facts: where people fill up, and whether the fuel is a thank-you or a business expense. A station’s own card suits a team that shares one chain, a prepaid Visa suits drivers spread across stations, and a fleet card suits fuel for company vehicles.
| Option | Fits best when | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Station gas gift card | Everyone fills up at one chain near work or home | Can’t be used at other chains |
| US prepaid Visa | Drivers use different stations across the US | Expires six months after issuance; holds must fit the balance |
| Choice Card | A mixed team, where some people would rather not get fuel | Limit the catalog to fuel brands if fuel is the point |
| Fleet or business fuel card | Fuel for company vehicles on company work | A company payment account, not a gift |

Fleet cards are a separate tool. Fuel brands sell business credit cards for this job: Chevron describes its Chevron and Texaco business cards as accepted at its stations “for fuel, snacks and fleet vehicle needs.” If the fuel goes into a company vehicle for company work, that’s a payment account for finance to set up, not a reward.
Region matters as much as team size: before you commit a whole team to one chain, check its station finder against where your recipients live and drive.
For employees, the IRS says gift cards are taxable wages however small: Publication 15-B says cash equivalents such as gift cards, “no matter how little, are never excludable as a de minimis benefit.” W-9 and 1099 forms are for recipients who aren’t employees, such as contractors. Check how your rewards are treated with your payroll team or tax adviser.
How Much Should a Gas Gift Card Be?
A gas gift card should be big enough to feel like a fill-up rather than a top-off. The US average price for regular gasoline was $4.269 a gallon in the week of October 26, 2026, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. At that price:
- $25 buys about 5.9 gallons
- $50 buys about 11.7 gallons
- $100 buys about 23.4 gallons
Take a 40-person field team at $50 each: that’s $2,000 in face value. Giftronaut charges no platform fee, and ACH and wire deposits carry no fee, while a credit card deposit adds a 3% processing fee, or $60 on that order.
Each card also has its own range. Exxon Mobil’s site sells physical cards from $5 to $500, Shell’s online cards run from $10 to $300, and Giftronaut lists its US prepaid Visa with a $5 minimum and a $1,000 maximum.
What to Look for When You Send Gas Gift Cards Online
A platform for sending gas gift cards should carry the fuel brands your people use, offer a multi-station option, and deliver to the phone where the card will be used. Before you order, check five things:
- The right stations. The chains your recipients actually use, plus a prepaid Visa or a Choice Card for anyone who doesn’t share them.
- Digital delivery. Email and text, so the card reaches the phone that will hold it in an app or wallet.
- Sending a list at once. A spreadsheet upload beats typing 40 addresses by hand.
- Delivery tracking. See which cards went out, and fix an address and resend when one bounces.
- Every cost and limit up front. Activation and funding fees, each card’s expiry, and where it works, before you click send.
If you use Giftronaut, each card’s page in the catalog shows how that card is redeemed, which is the quickest way to check its app and pump rules before you send.
Before You Send Gas Gift Cards to Your Drivers
I still keep a small prepaid card for road trips, and I still pay inside with it. These days, when a team asks me about fuel rewards, I ask for the smallest amount on their list first, and if it’s under a fill-up, a “pay inside if the pump says no” line goes into the reward message. The attendant would approve.
For your own team, start with one question: where do you usually fill up? If most answers name one chain, send that chain’s card. If they don’t, send a US prepaid Visa or a Choice Card limited to fuel brands, at an amount that covers a fill-up, and add one line to the message about paying inside if the pump declines.

Create a free Giftronaut account and send Shell or Chevron digital cards, or a US prepaid Visa, from one list.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where can you buy gas gift cards?
You can buy them from the fuel brands and from retailers. Shell sells eGift cards and ships physical cards from its site, and Exxon Mobil mails physical cards. The bp and Amoco cards are sold at their stations and at retailers such as Best Buy, Home Depot and Kroger.
Do gas stations sell gift cards?
Yes, fuel brands sell their own cards in their stations. Shell offers $25, $50 and $100 cards in store, and participating bp and Amoco stations sell bp Amoco cards.
Can you use a Visa gift card at the pump?
Usually, yes. Visa says you should be able to pay at the pump with a Visa gift card, and to use it inside the station if the transaction can’t be completed. A virtual Visa has to be added to a phone wallet first.
Why does a pump decline a gift card that still has money on it?
Usually because of the pre-authorization. Before fueling, the card issuer is asked to approve a set amount, and a card holding less than that can be declined. Pay inside for an amount at or below the balance instead.
Are gas gift cards a good reward for employees?
They’re a practical reward for people who drive to work or for work, as long as the card matches where they fill up. For employees, the IRS treats gift cards as taxable wages however small, so check with payroll first.
How long does a prepaid Visa for gas last?
Giftronaut’s US and Canada Prepaid Visa cards expire six months after issuance or when the balance reaches $0, whichever comes first. Shell, Exxon and bp say their own gas cards don’t expire.
Can you send gas gift cards by text message?
Yes. Giftronaut sends rewards by email, SMS (text message) or reward link, and texts reach US and Canadian mobile numbers at no extra cost.
